About Electric Bill Math

Electric Bill Math is an independent, data-driven site about household energy costs in the United States. It is not affiliated with any utility, retail electricity provider, HVAC contractor or government agency.

The site is run by Looks Einkaufs & Verwaltungs GmbH, a family business from Wangen im Allgäu, Germany, that manages several grocery stores. Refrigeration, lighting and heating make energy one of our largest costs, so reading tariffs and comparing heating systems is part of our everyday work. Household electricity in Germany costs more than in almost every U.S. state, and the switch from gas and oil boilers to heat pumps is well underway. That experience is the starting point for this site.

We do not have a sales interest in any heating system. All figures come from public sources, which are listed with their date on every page and explained on the methodology page. If we add affiliate links or ads, we will say so clearly on the pages where they appear.
